Science and Sailing -- Built for Fun!
The 2025 wing foil initiative will add wing foiling to after school and summer camp STEMsail programs. We are acquiring equipment and developing our program based on the North Learn to Foil Academy and Slingshot Foil Academy to bring this exciting new sport to Richmond youth. Windy San Francisco Bay is one of the best locations for wing foiling in North America, Richmond has the added bonus of protected (not choppy) yet windy reaches, and our partner the Richmond Yacht Club has been providing safe fun youth sailing since the 1960s.
STEP 1- Lets Get Comfortable!
Pool sessions at the Richmond Plunge and Swim Center familiarize us with personal flotation devices, wet suits, and paddleboards. Its all about getting comfortable in the water. Dave Anderson is a former Richmond City Lifeguard

STEP 6- Practice Time
Patience, determination, and lots of practice are the key to success. We make it possible with fun safe practice sessions whenever Mother Nature provides the wind. Where will your new wings take you?

STEP 2- Flying the wing
Wings and foils (STEM!) are the technology that makes wing foiling possible. We learn to fly the wing first on the grass and later using skateboards to harness the wind and master the wing. Our location at the Richmond Yacht Club and Miller-Knox shoreline is perfect!

STEP 3- On the water with stand-up paddle boards
Our mastery of the wing enables us to pilot stand up paddle boards around the windy yet protected Protero Reach. Sailing in displacement mode we develop our balance, skills, and understanding of sail. Staff piloting small boats are close by to help and keep us from drifting too far as we learn to stay upwind!

STEP 4- Towed Foiling
Standing on the foil board for the first time, a tow behind an RYC rigid inflatable outboard boat is our first experience engaging the foil to lift us up and fly across the water. If you can skateboard and stay upright on a paddle board, you can fly with a tow!

STEP 5- Putting it all together
With a wing in our hands we put it all together, first taxiing on our knees, then sailing in displacement mode, and finally with the foil engaged we are free to fly
